1990 Score Baseball -Part 1- This Is What Junk Wax Is All About

I’ll just come right out and say it.  The 1990 Score baseball card set just may be my personal favorite set of that era.  There are a lot of factors that make this set pretty great in my opinion.

This was the first set I ever purchased.  I purchased it right after it came out, in a local card shop.  I was 13 years old and I had just started making my own cash.  It cost me about $23.

I loved this set at the time. Sure it was my first actual set (for a very short bit), but it had some pretty attractive features for me.  Standing out right away, is the appearance of the cards themselves.  Each regular card is set in a bright background of either red, blue or green. They all have a bright yellow trim inside.  Like the ’87 Topps wood borders, some people hate this kind of color scheme.  I personally am a fan.  At the time, there was not a lot of unnecessary random color in cards.  Maybe the ’89 Donruss series prior had the most random use I can recall for the time period.  For me, it was catchy to the eye.

The cards also have really nice color backs that were just starting to come out at the time.  It really broke away from the traditional Topps way of backing a card.  And it was more exciting than the clean but sharp Donruss backs of the time.  The imagery is not the best, but its pretty much as good as it got for the cards of that day.

The 1990 Score baseball card series also has some very nice subsets inside.  Up until this point in time, most subsets were a little different from the normal cards of the set, but still followed some kind of overall scheme or pattern.  Score completely abandons that concept here with the Dream Team subset and even the Draft Picks subset as well.  This concept would lead to my favorite subsets of the time in the 1991 Score series.

We hadn’t seen a lot of random insert cards that varied much from the regular set design either.  And then came the famous 1990 Score Bo Jackson FB/BB black and white horizontal photo card.  Didn’t see that one coming.  But I had it.

I think the 1990 Score series may be a little underrated as well.  1989 was a interesting year with Upper Deck’s first major release.  They really set the bar high as far as a premium card was concerned.

One other thing of interest with this set is the error cards vs. the corrected versions.  Most often we see error cards being a higher value than the corrected versions, because the error is corrected early in production.  It would appear in the case of this set, that the error cards were put out in high quantity and the corrected versions had less circulation, as they have a little higher value.  That wouldn’t surprise me at all with what had to be some of the most extreme production numbers of the time.  The Ryne Sandberg error card in the set, would be an exception, and perhaps the most valuable card of the series.

Today, this set has some of the lowest value of all the full sized sets released up to then.  On eBay, in several cases, it costs more to ship the set than what its actually selling for.  Right now you can get one delivered for $12.  You can also get 3 delivered for $21.  That pretty much sums up the overall value of a factory sealed 1990 Score set.
